That is the reason...NYE was Bill Graham's big night, and they played their last NYE show just after he passed. Loved the NYE runs - remember listening on the radio - they always seemed to broadcast the New Year's show live on the radio, and the first set would start around midnight on the East coast...we'd be up all night as the show would end around 4:30 or 5. Managed to make it to two in person - '89 and the final one in '91.

I lived on the East Coast, but it was NYE '90 in Oakland that was the first time I ever taped a show off the radio. Just a few months after Brent passed. I love that show, it was so fun, especially end of Set 1 and the whole of set 2 with Mr. B. Marsalis on Sax. I'm sure many here are familiar. I played the hell out of that tape, thankfully it has been replaced on my hard drive in better shape than that old tape.

Hmmm, I didn't know that...interesting, and fitting.
Ya learn something everyday. In my case, I might have learned it here and forgotten it, but what the heck.
We always made a few of the post Christmas to NY run nights in the Bay Area in the late 70s and early 80s, but we reserved NY eve proper for a party with our DEAD cover band friends playing while also taping the broadcast (they were doing it regularly by the late 70s if I recall--broadcasting [BTW, I always thought the mix on those was BLAH! Yuck by comparison to something like Harding or Felt Forum of late 71; independent of the playing, the mix was just off I always thought]).

The best new years' shows were at Keisar Auditorium and we were saving a stash of both cash and drugs enough to make it through the night.Midnight at one show BG would come out on top of a smoking skull. Our vehicle was a rented limo of some kind and driving was left to a pro.At one of these shows it went on for so long that the staff was giving out care packages of an apple oran orange, a cup of granola and maybe some water.One year I remember BG was running simultanious shows w/ Tom Petty at Oakland Auditorium and had to get an escort to make it to the civic center to do the whole New Years' thing all over again.Hectic would be putting it mildly but it did work and no ragging of this show.

Interesting that he was pulling double duty that night. There is a great story from Huey Lewis. I guess he was playing a NYE show one year in the bay area and his mother or grandmother asked him if she could get New year's tickets. He said "your my mom you don't need tickets to my show" She said, "No, I need Grateful dead tickets"
